Preschool Gets Fired Up About Safety

By Jessica Young

HOLLYWOOD — Everyone knows how important it is to educate preschoolers on safety. Learning basic safety rules at a young age ensures their knowledge and ability to respond appropriately in an emergency situation.

On Oct. 11 the preschoolers were given the opportunity to learn all about fire education, thanks to the Seminole Fire and Rescue Unit.

Each child was able to enter the fire truck and sound the horn. After entering the truck they were sent to the back, where a fireman waited to assist them with spraying the fire hose. Once all the children were finished outside they were sent inside for a lesson in fire safety.

Inside all the children listened attentively while a firefighter explained the proper procedure to follow if they were to smell smoke or see fire in their home, also, the importance of dialing 911 or running to a neighbor’s house for help.

All the children had a chance to practice dialing 911 on a prop phone. They also received some coloring books, pencils, and a firefighter’s hat to take home. Although most of the children where pleased with their gifts, their true gift was the knowledge they walked away with that afternoon.
